Tide roll ECU in opener, 48-10
After game one, the hype for the young quarterback appears to be justified.
Keelon Russell made his much-anticipated debut as the Tide quarterback on Saturday afternoon, and the sophomore did not disappoint as 13th-ranked Alabama rolled over visiting East Carolina 48-10. Russell’s debut was impressive – he threw for 256 yards and ran for 86 yards and a touchdown. The Tide run game, a source of scrutiny during the off-season due to its record-setting poor performance in 2025, showed signs of life as senior tailback Daniel Hill, freshman E.J. Crowell, and Trae’shawn Brown led the way on the ground for a combined 227 yards and five touchdowns.
The offensive line was a position that grossly underperformed last season, yet the 2026 version looked much better than at any time a year ago. Despite two bad first-quarter drops, Ryan Coleman-Williams had a good day, hauling in eight passes for 130 yards.
The Bama D held a good American Conference team that won nine games last year to a mere two yards rushing on 22 attempts. Third-year Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer’s squad dominated both lines of scrimmage, and senior linebacker Yhonzae Pierre made an early impact, picking off a Mitch Griffis pass and returning it 27 yards for his first career touchdown.
Bama did have the usual first-game errors early, and at times the young squad looked out of sorts; however, it was an overall good start to the 2026 season and was a far cry from last year’s opener, which saw an unprepared Tide squad fall to a Florida State team that ended the season with a losing record.
This was a tough opener to gauge. Under second year coach Blake Harrell, the Pirates were coming off a nice 9-4 season which included a Military Bowl victory over Pitt. The Pirates welcomed 23 transfers during the off-season, which included former Texas Tech backup quarterback Griffis. Furthermore, new offensive coordinator Jordan Davis arrived from North Texas with the reputation of running high-powered offenses.
Meanwhile, Alabama’s only offensive returning starter was Coleman-Williams, and the defense only had four starters returning. Of course, the biggest question mark was Russell himself, who beat out veteran Austin Mack in a quarterback battle that went into fall camp. After last year’s FSU debacle, Bama Nation was treated to an opener largely devoid of drama. In addition, the team looked hungry and prepared, and after getting blasted in the trenches in last year’s quarterfinal against eventual national champion Indiana, it was good to see the Tide control both lines of scrimmage, as there was notable physicality from the boys in Crimson. Tougher tests are yet to come, yet Bama is off and running in 2026.
Bama opened the new season with a nine-play, 46-yard drive that stalled on the ECU 28. Veteran kicker Conor Talty nailed a 41-yard field goal to open the scoring at 3-0. The Pirates moved backwards six yards on their first drive, and Russell and the Tide answered with a nine-play, 86-yard drive that resulted in Bama’s first touchdown of the new season. Highly touted freshman tailback E.J. Crowell outraced the Pirate D to the corner of the end zone from three yards out to give the Tide a 10-0 lead with 4:12 left in the first quarter. Russell, who completed passes to 8 different receivers throughout the game, showed poise in the pocket, hitting downfield passes of 18 and 31 yards during the drive.
After another ECU three-and-out, Coleman-Williams would return a punt 23 yards, and after a 15-yard facemask penalty was tacked on to the end of the run, Alabama started its first drive of the second quarter on the Pirate 26. Five plays later, Daniel Hill scored the first of his two touchdowns on the day from 4 yards out to stretch the lead to 17-0. Two plays after the ensuing kickoff, Griffis took advantage of a blown coverage from the veteran Bama secondary as he hit receiver Tyler Johnson for a 68-yard catch-and-run that placed the Pirates on the Tide one. Griffis then found Jermiah Melvin on a beautiful throw in the corner of the end zone to close the gap to 17-7 at the 13:41 mark of the second quarter.
Any hope of the Pirates making a run was dashed as Russell marched the Tide 86 yards in 7 plays, and when Hill scored again from two yards out, the Tide lead stretched to 24-7. The highlight of the drive was a 58-yard catch-and-run to Coleman-Williams. Two plays later, Pierre tallied his pick-six and the rout was on. Bama would add a Russell 3-yard touchdown run, and the teams went into halftime with the Crimson Tide leading 38-7.
The third quarter started with Coleman-Williams coughing up the ball on the Bama 42. ECU could only muster 16 yards on the drive and ended up hitting a 34-yard field goal to cut the Tide lead to 38-10. The remainder of the third quarter saw both teams punt twice until Russell led the Tide offense on a nice nine-play, 77-yard drive that resulted in freshman Brown’s first rushing touchdown of his career from two yards out to increase the Alabama lead to 45-10. Talty would close the scoring with a 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to bring the final score to 48-10.
Bama would dominate the statistics, outgaining the Pirates 487 to 162. Alabama amassed 28 first downs to the Pirates' 5. While Alabama was able to convert a respectable 8 of 15 third downs, ECU failed on all 9 of their third-down attempts. Both teams ended the game without any significant injuries.
While East Carolina tries to get back on track at home against Appalachian State next week, Bama travels to Lexington for a tricky conference opener against Kentucky. Bama has opened as a 10.5-point favorite for the contest against the 1-0 Wildcats, who had their way in first-year head coach and former Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein’s debut in a 45-13 rout of Youngstown State. Notre Dame transfer quarterback Kenny Mitchey had an impressive day for the Cats, passing for 301 yards and 4 touchdowns, and he will test the veteran Tide secondary on Saturday. The game is set for a 3:30 kickoff on ABC.
